Alliant makes the following powders:
Power Pistol, Bullseye, Red Dot, Green Dot, Unique, Herco, Blue Dot, 2400, 7 Reloder, 12 Reloder, 15 Reloder, 19 Reloder and 22 Reloder.
I use the pistol powders of Alliant. You will see I lean toward Unique and Bullseye. Bullseye is a very fast burning powder, just about at the top of the charts. It is ideal for short cases and light bullets. Unique is well named. It can be used in so many applications, I find it about the most useful pistol powder. Other brands have a similar powder, like Hodgdon's Universal. The people at Accurate are very helpful, too. Their No. 2 and No. 5 are similar to Bullseye and Unique.
Hodgdon makes the following powders:
Clays, International Clays, Universal Clays, HS7, HS6, H110, HP38, H4227, H4198, H322, BL-C2, H4831, H335, H4895, H380, H414, H4350, Varget, H450, H4831SC, H1000 and H870
Hodgdon's Universal is almost the same as Unique. I can use them with the
same loads (but both companies are quick to say they are not interchangable).
I like the HP38 for .38 Special, .357 Magnum. The HP38 is not as fast as Bullseye or Clays, but is faster than Unique or Universal. So, it's a good in-between powder for many kinds of pistol loads. I like their web site, too!
They are the first to publish loads for the 500 S&W on their web site in early 2004.

Accurate makes the following powders:
For Pistol: No.2, No.5, No.7, No.9.
No. 2 is fast like Bullseye and good in the .38 special. No.5 is similar to Unique, but a little slower burning. No. 7 is a good choice for magnum pistol and high intensity cartridges. No. 9 is slowest and good for .44 magnum.
For Rifle: 1680, 2015BR, 2230, 2460, 2495BR, 2520, 2700, 4350, 3100 and 8700.
1680 is fast burning for .22 Hornet, .222 Remington and .223 Remington and the lighter bullets. 2015BR is good for Bench Rest shooting in sizes from .22 Hornet up to big Magnums. 2230 is good for .223 Remington type cartridges. 2460 is good for 7mm and .308 Winchester. 2495BR is another Bench Rest, extruded propellant and works good for shooting cast bullets in the .45-70 Government. Accurate says that their 2520 is the most popular of all propellants. It's a medium slow burning, ball propellant that gives excellent results in medium capacity cases like the 308 class. 2700 is similar to 2520, but for bullets of a heavier weight class. 4350 is very similar to IMR4350 and a popular powder. 3100 serves from .243 Winchester to the big magnums. 8700 is the slowest powder available. Ideal for magnum rifle cases from the .257 Weatherby Magnum to the .300 Weatherby Magnum.
Accurate has a great Customer Service dept. Call them when you need help with special loads using their powders. They have a lot of loads for the .357 SIG cartridge and now for the new 500 S&W
IMR makes the following powders:
For Pistol: "Hi-Skor"700-X, "Hi-Skor" 800-X, PB, SR 7625, SR 4756, SR 4759, IMR 4227, IMR 4198, IMR 3031, IMR 4064, IMR 4895, IMR 4320, and IMR 4350.
For Rifle: SR 4759, IMR 4227, IMR 4198, IMR 3031, IMR 4064, IMR 4895, IMR
4320, IMR 4350, IMR 4831 and IMR 7828
As you see, many of the IMR Powders can be used for pistol and rifle loads. IMR stood originally for "Improved Military Rifle" and the powders were used very extensively in them. That is why I have only used the powders in my rifle loads. But if you wish, by all means get one of their manuals and try the handgun loads they have published. You will find mostly the "Hi-Skor", PB and the "SR" powders used for handguns.

Vihtavuori makes the following powders:
N310, N3SF, N3SL, N320, N321, N324, N3SM, N330, N331, N338, N340, 3N37, N3SH, N350, N110, N120, N125, N130, N132, N133, N135, N140, N150, N160, N165, 24N41, N170, 20N29.
They have a nice reloading book showing all their powders for Rifle, Handgun and Shotgun loads. There is a very good chart in the front of their manual showing the Burning Rates of ALL powders, so you can easily see where their powders fit in. For example, it shows Accurate #5, Hodgdon Universal, and Alliant Unique about the same burning rate as their Vihtavuori N338.
